Why support local farmers?

Athens, GA is home to many local farmers who provide wholesome, fresh produce to support our community. Purchasing local food is good for your health, your community, and the environment we all share.

Environment

Buying food from local farmers reduces food miles (the distance your food has to travel in order to meet its destination). Fewer miles means less fossil fuel use, less air pollution, and less greenhouse gas emissions. Also, many local and small farmers engage in sustainable practices that eliminate harmful chemicals and regenerate healthy soils. By supporting them, you allow for these farmers to continue promoting sustainable farming.

Health

Food grown locally and sold locally ripens more naturally, enhancing both its taste and nutrient value. Consuming nutrient-rich seasonal produce can reduce risk of disease, strengthen your immune system, and enhance your overall health and wellbeing. Local food is also often free of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicide, GMOs, or unnecessary preservatives. This is partially due to the fact that local food does not have to travel for as long as it would if it were being consumed in a faraway destination.

Community

Buying from local farmers means that your dollars will go straight back into your local economy. This helps local farmers in the area continue to provide jobs to local community members. Supporting local small farmers also allows for farmers markets to connect local shoppers with the great people who grow their food.
