About the Program

The Partnership for a Sustainable Athens provides meaningful experiential learning opportunities for students and valuable support for community partners working to advance sustainability and resilience in the Athens area.

Community Partners 
Community Partners can include any UGA or ACC department, non-profit organization, government agency or local business working toward goals outlined by Envision Athens, ACC Sustainability Plan, and/or UGA’s 2020 Strategic Plan.

Prospective partners submit internship or project requests, assist in selecting candidates, host a student intern or project team, and pay 50% of the intern salary or a portion of project costs.

Internships

Internships provide community partners with motivated students who bring enthusiasm, new perspectives and disciplinary expertise to their work. Student interns gain valuable professional experience and applied academic learning. Student interns work 10 hours per week, including one hour at the UGA Office of Sustainability all-intern meeting for leadership training, networking and project support.for a Sustainable Athens provides meaningful experiential learning opportunities for students and valuable support for community partners working to advance sustainability and resilience in the Athens area.

Community Partner Responsibilities: 

Develop a job description and submit a request for a student intern to the UGA Office of Sustainability. Intern projects should engage students in meaningful hands-on work addressing a sustainability challenge and should be scaled appropriately for a student working 9 hours per week for one – two semesters. (Internships that are administrative or sales-focused are not appropriate for this opportunity.)

Positions are for one academic semester, with the option to extend for additional semesters. Interns must be engaged in meaningful hands-on work addressing a sustainability challenge.

Provide 50% of the student intern salary through a lump sum payment each semester.  Partner will receive an invoice from the Office of Sustainability at the start of the semester.  Payment is due by March 1 for current spring semester interns and October 1 for current fall semester interns.
50% salary for an undergraduate intern for one semester is typically $787.50.
50% salary for a graduate student intern for one semester is typically $1,012.50.

Support the student intern by providing a mentor, timely feedback, office space, and other required resources to set the student up for success.

Complete administrative tasks including internship evaluation forms.

Participate in interviews and intern selection.

Before committing, partners should confirm that they have sufficient resources to guide and review intern work, attend monthly program meetings, and pay partial intern salary.

 UGA Office of Sustainability Responsibilities:

Administer and support all aspects of the Sustainable Athens internship program.

Advertise open positions, coordinate interviews, and facilitate the selection process.

Coordinate onboarding and payroll provided by UGA Facilities Management Division.

Provide templates and review intern work plans, mid-semester and final evaluations.

Facilitate weekly meetings, review student work, and organize the Semester in Review showcase.

November
Internship positions are posted and advertised to students.

Late November
Students submit applications. OoS Staff and Community Partners review applications.

Late November – Early December
Community Partners and OoS Staff interview interns.

December
Students are selected and notified prior to the end of the semester.

January
Selected student interns begin work the first week of the semester and continue 10 hours per week when classes are in session.

March
Community Partners provide payment to Office of Sustainability for current spring interns by March 1.

May
Students present their work at the Semester in Review event from 11-1pm on UGA Reading Day.

For fall semester interns (August through December):

January
UGA Office of Sustainability solicits internship requests at the beginning of each semester for the following semester.

March
Community Partners submit intern requests by March 15 for the following Fall semester.

April
Internship positions are posted and advertised to students.

Late April
Students submit applications. OoS Staff and Community Partners review applications.

Projects

Partnership for a Sustainable Athens projects provide UGA students with an opportunity to apply their academic learning to a hands on sustainability challenge and provide Community Partners with valuable resources to further their mission.

Community Partner Responsibilities
Develop a project description and submit a project request form to the UGA Office of Sustainability. Project must address a significant sustainability challenge with a feasible scope for students to complete in one to two semesters, individually or as a part of a team. Projects must be something that students can work on independently with support.

To ensure a successful project, the community partner must have adequate support for the project including personnel, finances, and other resources as needed to complete the project.

UGA Office of Sustainability Responsibilities
Serve as a resource for direction on projects, assistance with project management, and professional connections.

Organize and host the Semester in Review event to showcase student work.

Project Timeline

The Partnership solicits project requests at the beginning of each semester for the following semester.

Projects may be completed during fall, spring or summer semesters as appropriate.

Community Partners can submit project requests on a rolling basis. To be incorporated into Capstone or other coursework, Community Partners should request Fall semester projects by February and Spring semester projects by September.

Interested faculty and students respond to the Partnership / Community Partner as soon as possible to confirm interest.

Students present their work at the Semester in Review event from 11-1pm on Reading Day.
