Zero Waste UGA

Program Overview
Zero Waste UGA (ZWUGA) is an interdisciplinary experiential learning initiative to foster a culture of sustainability through waste reduction. The UGA campus will function as a living laboratory to support teaching, research, service and outreach, student engagement, and operational innovations toward a circular economy. Students, faculty, staff, and external partners will work together to significantly reduce landfilled waste through projects implemented during this 3-year program.
Background
The UGA Office of Sustainability has coordinated two campus-wide experiential learning initiatives, Watershed UGA & Foodshed UGA. These initiatives, especially Watershed UGA, effectively engaged UGA faculty, staff, and students in sustainability through targeted actions. For example, over 100 classes incorporated Watershed UGA content, and a tangible outcome included the restoration of Lake Herrick for recreational use. Zero Waste UGA will engage the campus community and assist in achieving UGA’s strategic waste reduction goals.
